MHSOP has a specialist Unit at Barry Hospital for Younger Onset Dementia (YOD). The Young Onset Dementia Service is a specialist and dedicated service for people who receive a diagnosis of dementia under the age of 65.

Volunteers will also be meaningfully engaging with patients through activity, either 1:1 or in small groups in the Day Room. Activities include puzzles and games, arts & crafts, seasonal activities (e.g. Christmas card making, valentines decorations) and morning Newspaper groups. Volunteers may also be helping the Refocusing Nurse on the ward to deliver meaningful engagement and activities such as social/friendship groups, physical activity groups (e.g. quoits and skittles).

The role with YOD will involve engaging with patients who will have varying needs and levels of functioning and so will require resourceful volunteers who are confident communicating with non-verbal patients.
